Now, during wartime, the issue of mandatory conscription from the ultra-orthodox community has resurfaced. When the protest called for drafting Haredi men to protect human rights, I appeared that day in a burqa with a sign saying, "Haredi women: Torah or Army" in the name of equality. My demand to the Haredi religious population is: Women do not study Torah because it is a severe prohibition, so why don't they serve in the army? We ask men to serve, so why exclude Haredi women? If there is a law stating that Haredim are not required to serve, then let the women serve. This is an issue that isn't truly discussed, and as someone who believes in gender equality and sharing the burden, I think we must address it.
